SSPEL is an acronym that stand for Spreaders Of Gospel. It’s an afro gospel music group consisting of six male vocalists. This group started in a rural area of Eastern Cape called Ndevana, and Khayalethu Ngalonkulu & Sipheni Baku-Baku created it.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Kicking off in 2013, after spotting and meeting other male musicians in different churches from their community, Khayalethu & Sipheni decided to start a music group that will spread good news with an objective of inspiring other young people from their community and that was the birth of SSPEL. The group has since grown to be well known, recognised and loved most in the Eastern Cape for their unique sound of Gospel. Their sound involves various elements and genres such as Afro Pop, Jazz, Afro Soul, RNB and Gospel and they call their music Afro Gospel.
In 2015, SSPEL recorded their first single with two songs, INDUMISO and COMING BACK, and this project gave them an incredible response from music lovers around the country. These songs received radio airplay on stations like SABC Radio Umhlobo Wenene FM, Link FM, Fort Hare FM and other community radio stations in the Eastern Cape. These two songs both had music videos which are still playlisted on One Gospel TV channel.
The following year, SSPEL was nominated in two categories
at INGOMA AWARDS, for BEST GOSPEL GROUP and BEST POP/SOUL GOSPEL ALBUM. They also performed on SABC TV shows, and also had an article on Drum Magazine and Daily Dispatch Newspaper. Early in 2017, SSPEL performed at Umlazi (KZN) in a special Thanks Giving and Prayer organised by Pastor Thomas Radebe from Ukhozi FM, sharing the stage with Hlengiwe Mhlaba while appearing on several unplugged sessions in community radio stations in Eastern Cape.
So far, the biggest highlights for SSPEL have been their performance at STANDARD BANK JOY OF JAZZ 2017 (One of the biggest Jazz Festival in Africa) and also performing at Berlin November 2017 (One of the biggest Horse Racing Festival in Eastern Cape). The group has featured in small and big stages mostly in Johannesburg and Eastern Cape, sharing the stage with the likes of Khaya Mthethwa, the late Sfiso Ncwane, Judith Sephuma, Joyous Celebrations, Solly Mahlangu, Bethusile Mcinga, Dumi Mkokstad, Dr Tumi, Joyous Celebration, Mabongi, Afrotraction, Lebo Sekgobela, Amanda Black, Sjava, Sands and more.
