Anytime, any day, anywhere, I`m always glad to try new tunes and expand my evergrowing repertoire which now includes a lot of praise, worship, contemporary, a fusion of Afrobeat and Afropop gospel songs. Some have found their way to churches across the continent becoming anthems for listeners.
In Ghana last week, Calvis Hammond, a powerful vocalist released the "God Is Able" album for all to buy, download and enjoy. So what could be better than having a quick chat with the talented minister?
Who is Calvis Hammond?
I am a contemporary Ghanaian gospel music minister. From my early beginnings to entertaining my friends and classmates in my youthful days, God has taken and shaped my talent into the powerful music minister I am today. I have ministered on several platforms, bringing a unique experience to many. I released my first single "None Like You" in October 2015. Followed by “Ma Jie Oyi” and “God Is Able” in 2017, then Franco Jam in 2018.
My unique tone developed from years of diverse musical experiences and exposure. I combined the experience of having worked with many choirs and various gospel artists with eight years as the Director of Music and Productions of the evergreen Joyful Way Incorporated.
The most influential people in my ministry have been multiple award-winning international gospel artiste, Fred Hammond, whose heart and music struck a familiar chord with me.
The late Danny Nettey, whose mentorship shaped and spurred my growth in the music industry as well as the invaluable training from the Joyful Way family.
Today, I`m an established worship leader, a recording artist, and most importantly, a servant of God ready to give the best of my heart’s melodies to my Maker.
I fellowship with the Life International Church at Achimota, under the leadership of Bishop Gordon Kisseih, where I serve as the Deacon in charge of Music. I`m married to Kate and blessed with three children.
You have just released the "God Is Able" album. Why did you pick that title?
The title of the album resonates with my testimonies where I have seen God do great things in my life that are beyond my imaginations or dreams. It comes from the “God Is Able” single I released last year which is also on the album. It was a song originally composed by KODA.
How many tracks are in the "God Is Able" album and which one is your favourite?
There are nine tracks on the album. It is difficult to pick a favourite as each song brings out something different from me musically and they all bless me personally, with several testimonies through the recording of each song.
But I think the first track “Lala Hee” meaning “New Song” is generating a lot of interest as it is very different from music produced these days. It explores my Ga roots while blending it beautifully with African Jazz. I found it difficult explaining to the producers how I wanted it to sound, but at the end of the day it came out excellent beyond my expectation.
What your expectations for the new album?
It’s my prayer that this album will be a blessing to people all over the world and remind them that our God is still able to make a way even when there seems to be no way. Musically it’s refreshing, a new sound, a source of hope and inspiration.
The album launch was yesternight at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, what was the attendance like and how did people receive the album?
The launch event turned out amazing with free-flowing music from the album as well as other artists. Patrons from all walks of life were there to support, as well as leading gospel artists like Joe Mettle and Nii Okai.
Ministering on stage were KODA, Cwesi Oteng, Jackie Mpare and Toks Nnamani from Nigeria. The album was well received; people were able to participate and follow the songs as a number of them have been released previously as singles.
The production of your first album, God is Able, was done over two years. Why has it taken you that long to release it?
It has taken a little over a year to put this album together because of the attention and value we placed on the production of each song, taking our time to produce something excellent that will glorify God and something that will make us proud.
We were blessed to have worked with different top and most sought-after producers and engineers on almost all the songs to bring out that variety and also to explore the different music styles that I’m blessed to sing as an artist. I must admit that working as a banker also means that I had the production work planned out like projects.
