The announcement of Sarah Mullally as the 133rd Bishop of London will come as a relief to people who have accused the Church of England of gender inequality.

Born on 26 March 1962 into the Bowser`s family, and educated at Winston Churchill Comprehensive School - Sarah, the first female Bishop of London enrolled for a degree in nursing at South Bank Polytechnic [she was only eighteen years old at that time].

Fast-forwarding through her accomplishment before the Queen`s approval:

  • Sarah finished as a registered general nurse [with clinical work experience at St Thomas` Hospital]

  • Then, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in 1984

  • She got married to her husband, Eamonn Mullally when she was 25 years old

  • At 30 years of age, she finished with a Master of Science degree at London South Bank University [where she later became a fellow]

  • She was appointed the Chief Nursing Officer at the age of 37 [the youngest to do so]

  • By 2002, she was already a priest

  • In 2005, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire [DBE] for her contribution to nursing and midwifery

  • After many years of service, Sarah was installed the Canon Treasurer at Salisbury Cathedral

  • Later assuming responsibility as the Bishop of Crediton [Diocese of Exeter] office

  • On 18 December 2017, she was heralded as the new Bishop of London

Following her appointment, Sarah Mullally, the new Bishop of London said, “It is a great honour to be nominated to the See of London. Having lived and worked in London for over 32 years, the thought of returning here is about returning home.

"I am often asked what it has been like to have had two careers. First in the NHS and now in the Church, she continued.

"I prefer to think that I have always had one vocation: to follow Jesus Christ, to know him and to make him known, always seeking to live with compassion in the service of others, whether as a nurse, a priest, or a bishop. To be given the opportunity to do that now in this vibrant world-city is a wonderful privilege.”
